La Barra de Santiago Estuary

Located just 4 kms from the sleepy fishing village, La Barra de Santiago, in the western part of El Salvador, the beach house “Capricho", is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy nature. The beach house is situated at a peninsula in front of one of the best preserved mangrove forests in the country. You have access to both the estuary with its calm waters as well as the Pacific Ocean, with great waves (also for surfing).
The beach is wide, clean and secluded. This makes it a quiet and calm place with few people so you can enjoy the ocean in tranquility, mostly just in the company of local fishermen that fish with nets from the beach.
Due to its location in the nature reserve, you can observe from “Capricho” many birds that flock to this area to find food.

Especially at dawn the birds fly in and crowd in the treetops nearby to sleep. To visit the beautiful bocana (tip of the peninsula) there is just a 15 min. walk. You can do boat trips into the mangrove forests accompanied by our trained tourist guide who will tell you about the diversity of animal and plant life that exists here as well as the rich history of this place once habited by indigenous tribes, who left behind pyramids and other unsolved mysteries. Many of the birds and mammals found here are endangered species and are only to be found in this area

The small convenience store in the village (10 min. by car, 45 min. by foot from the ranch) has a limited selection of food and vegetables.

There are no restaurants or discos nearby, remember this is a protected natural area with little tourist development, but in return you will find pristine nature, friendly locals and amazing wildlife. At Capricho we can connect you with locals who can provide both small dug-out-canoe as well as motor boats with whom you can explore extensive mangroves. This 1775.6 hectare large area of mangroves is one of the most important in El Salvador and the best preserved. You can find crocodiles that now breed freely in the inner parts of the mangroves after being extinct in the area for decades. Barra de Santiago is also one of the places in the country with most experience in turtle-egg hatching, every year thousands of baby-turtles are set back into the ocean. La Barra de Santiago is also on the list of RAMSAR sites of Wetlands of International Importance.

We can also provide connections with local fishermen who do deep water fishing in larger boats, price is aprox. $30 per hour (max 3 pers) this is an opportunity to observe the rich marine life along the Salvadoran coast such as dolphins and sea turtles. La Barra is also great for surfing and diving, contact us for more info.
